SUPPORTING CAREGIVERS
A climber in the San Diego 4.0 movement is a motivated emerging leader who is hungry to grow, learn new skills, and make a real impact. They are not waiting for permission. They are looking for the tools and pathways that help them rise in a world being reshaped by technology and empathy. San Diego 4.0 gives them that path through flexible online courses designed to build confidence, curiosity, and modern tech fluency.
Through these courses, climbers will learn how to use VR for Good to help seniors and communities feel seen, valued, and connected. They will explore augmented reality as a tool for storytelling, navigation, and hands-on support, both inside and outside the screen. And they will experiment with robotics to create smoother, safer, more efficient workplaces.
San Diego 4.0 helps climbers build the blend of heart and skills needed to thrive in the future and lead others there.
INDIVIDUAL CLIMBER PLAN

Long before today’s skyline rose, Black innovators were shaping the city’s future through education, craftsmanship, art, and community leadership. They built opportunity from adversity, creating the foundation for the progress we celebrate today. Their influence reached every corner of the region — from classrooms to city halls, from businesses to neighborhoods where determination and vision became acts of everyday heroism.
As the nation approaches its 250th Independence Day, this project honors the men and women who gave their talent and strength to a future they might never see. It is not about politics or division; it is about gratitude. It’s a reminder that freedom and innovation were not gifts — they were earned, often at great cost, by those who believed in something larger than themselves. Their work carried a belief that progress could be inclusive, that every generation could stand taller because of the one before it.

CHOOSE YOUR CITY
As the visitor steps into the Virtual Reality World, a quiet hum of history surrounds them — a living memorial where innovation and courage intertwine. The experience opens in the late 1800s, when San Diego’s Black pioneers helped shape the region’s emerging industries. Allen Light (1870), one of the city’s earliest African American settlers and a skilled seafarer, is remembered for his work in maritime navigation and early coastal trade — foundations that helped connect frontier San Diego to wider commerce. Nearby, George Ramsey (1895), a blacksmith and craftsman, stands beside a recreated workshop, his legacy symbolizing the role of Black artisans who built the region’s early transportation and agricultural tools during the Second Industrial Revolution.
